The tradition of side-stepping in this manner is centuries old and stems originally from the Church & Witch Hunting laws, the advent of the Spiritualist movement in the 19th & early 20th centuries revived this kind segregationist thinking; keeping distance "just in case" and in the process, allowing things to become skewed against the mystical.
