One account has him 'buried' in a cave at Tora Bora. It's equally possible he's died somehow in a US or ISAF hospital. Then the body can't be 'used'. Further, it would be pretty badly decomposed after a few days, and that is not how devout Muslims treat their dead, they have to dispose of the body ASAP. They're not all cold, calculating Anglos you know. Further, their DNA technology is a little limited, if it came to that, not that I trust anyone saying they've found a DNA match for someone in such circumstances. He got a visit once from the local CIA guy while in a hospital in Dubai getting dialysis.

I would think the US government would much rather he be dead than available to testify at trial and go into detail about how the US helped fund his early days - what advantage do they have in a trial?

The best argument for Bin Laden not having been killed long ago is why would Al Qaeda go along with it? Wouldn't it be a great strike against America to show that they had lied? How do you get them to cooperate like that?

That said, as I've said before, the US handled the post execution very badly. It's like they wanted there to be conspiracy theories. Maybe they did? I dunno.
