going back to the OP, not sure how 'Sputnik' managed to pull down information that contained an encoded version of the entire periodic table (as we understand it). I mean, how do you 'encode the periodic table'? It's a meaningless statement. You would have to somehow describe orbitals and so on for anyone to even guess it was anything about a periodic table, which would be a very long and complicated transmission indeed. And it's not as though we don't have comms satellites and SETI and so forth in space now which has never detected anything meaningful, why 'Sputnik' which was a primitive orbiting device which only gave out a self-generated radio signal for PR purposes?
